By default, searches are not case-sensitive. For example, searches for "george washington", "George Washington" and "gEoRgE wAsHiNgToN" will all yield the same results. However, should you wish to perform a case-sensitive search, you can enable this option within the "advanced" search panel. Case-sensitive searches are marginally quicker than their counterparts.
Boolean logic allows you to give the search engine rules for it to follow when performing its search. Using the logic controls, you are able to refine your search to a point where its results are extremely accurate.
NOTE: The logic controls only have an effect when multiple keywords are used.
or: the search engine will match within pages that contain any of the keywords you submit.
A match is positive if the page contains "foo" or "bar"...
(or is the default logic of the search engine)
and: the search engine will match within pages that contain all of the keywords you submit.
A match is positive if the page contains "foo" and "bar"...
You can also use the "&&" shorthand in your search queries to enable and logic - eg: "foo && bar" (without the quotes)
phrase: the search engine will match within pages that contain all of the keywords you submit, exactly as you enter them.
A match is positive if the page contains the text: "foo bar"...
You can also enclose your search query within quote marks to request phrase logic - eg: "foo bar" (with the quotes)
not: the search engine will match within pages that contain any of the keywords you submit, but will not match against any pages that also contain keywords you have chosen to exclude.
A match is positive if the page contains "foo" and not "bar"...
To mark a word as one that should be excluded, prefix it with an exclamation mark - eg: "!bar" (without the quotes)
For example, to find all pages that contain the word "radiation" but not those that also contain the word "nuclear", you should enter the following: "radiation !nuclear"... (without the quotes)
Using and or not logic increases the time taken for a search operation to complete (slightly). Or and phrase logic do not have any impact on search engine performance.
Control how many matches are displayed on each page by entering a value within the range 1-999 in the "display" field.
You can control the scope of the search by excluding folders. The "exclude these folders" panel lists all root level folders and, additionally, lists a "documentation" folder (which is excluded by default). Checking folders excludes them (and any sub-folders they might contain) from the search. This allows you to selectively search specific sections of the website. A natural benefit of this is that your searches are quicker to execute.
The "documentation" folder is a special case. This folder contains all of the documentation relating to the usage and functionality of the website. Unchecking this folder results in only the documentation being searched, regardless of any other selections you may have made.
Finally, for refining your search further still, you can use the "exclude these elements" panel to control which components of each page are searched. You can exclude the following elements: title, image caption, creation date, description and / or body. The creation date is excluded by default.
